Parents Demand Unified Online Safety Standards Across Social Media

More than four-in-five parents now demand that platforms like TikTok, YouTube, and Snapchat adopt the same safety protocols recently negotiated between Meta and state regulators. A new survey from the Coalition to Empower our Future highlights a rare bipartisan consensus, with over 80 percent of parents backing immediate legislative intervention.

The research, conducted by Mercury Analytics, reveals that support for the Meta agreement transcends party lines, garnering approval from 82 percent of Democratic parents and 84 percent of Republican respondents. Families view features such as expanded parental controls, mandatory screen-time limits, and automated notification muting as essential tools for protecting youth mental health.

Glen Weiner, executive director of the Coalition to Empower our Future, emphasized that the current patchwork of safety policies is insufficient. Because children frequently migrate between platforms, parents are pushing for a standardized regulatory environment. This sentiment extends to the ballot box: 67 percent of surveyed parents indicated they are more likely to vote for officials who champion these digital safety mandates. With 80 percent of parents favoring state-level legislation, the pressure on policymakers to codify these protections into law is intensifying.
