ISO Launches First Global Standard for Menstrual and Menopausal Workplace Support

Seven in ten employees expect their employers to implement clear processes for managing menstruation and menopause in the office, according to new research. In response, the International Organization for Standardization has released ISO 45010, the first global framework designed to guide organizations in fostering inclusive and supportive workplace environments.

The standard provides actionable recommendations for human resources and occupational health professionals to identify and mitigate workplace factors that impact employees during these periods. Despite growing awareness, BSI research covering 6,494 women across seven countries reveals a persistent disconnect: 60% of respondents report that their employers never proactively discuss or offer support regarding these health challenges.

ISO Secretary-General Sergio Mujica noted that the organization has opted to make the standard available at no cost to ensure global accessibility. By removing financial barriers, the framework aims to assist businesses of all sizes in closing the gap between general awareness and concrete policy implementation. Development of the guidance required international consensus among experts across multiple sectors, marking a shift toward recognizing these physiological experiences as core components of occupational health and safety.
