The crisis deepened over the last two weeks, with the number of plants facing critically low stockpiles climbing from 45 on August 26 to 53 by early September. Data from the Central Electricity Authority confirms that coal—the backbone of India’s power generation—is struggling to reach destination sites at the pace required to meet surging electricity demand.
Coal India Limited and various captive mine operators are now prioritizing rake loading to stabilize the supply chain. While monsoon rains disrupted domestic logistics throughout August, the government maintains that corrective measures are currently active to restore inventory levels. According to industry analysis, national coal stocks fell by 15.5% in the first three weeks of August alone, as burn rates consistently outpaced incoming rail deliveries. Officials now face the dual challenge of managing extreme temperature-driven consumption while clearing the logistical backlog created by seasonal weather disruptions.
