Lyon Prepares for 18th Contemporary Art Biennale

Twelve days before the public opening, the 18th Lyon Biennale is finalizing preparations for its professional preview days on September 17 and 18. The event, running through December 13, 2026, will transform the city into a vast exhibition space featuring 120 artists across 11 distinct metropolitan venues.

Under the theme 'To pass from one dream to another,' this year's edition is led by artistic director Isabelle Bertolotti and guest curator Catherine Nichols. The program draws inspiration from Lyon’s historic traboules—the city's signature hidden passageways—to explore themes of circulation, trade, and the exchange of resources. The exhibition seeks to challenge traditional museum-going by integrating works into heritage sites, former industrial zones, and everyday public spaces, including a metro station and a parking garage.

Three primary hubs anchor the event: Les Grandes Locos, the Musée d'art contemporain de Lyon (macLYON), and the Musée des Tissus et des Arts décoratifs. While Les Grandes Locos will host works focused on industrial production and transformation, macLYON will address existential questions of inheritance and debt, with the Musée des Tissus highlighting relational exchange. Professional accreditation remains open until September 16, offering participants exclusive access to networking sessions and private previews ahead of the public launch on September 19.
