The financial terms of the acquisition remain undisclosed. While the project is currently held by Glencore with a 70% stake and Mitsubishi with 30%, it has yet to be granted a formal mining lease. Rio Tinto stated that the transaction is subject to standard regulatory approvals. Should the deal close, the company plans to coordinate with state and Commonwealth agencies, alongside traditional owners, to map out the next stages of development.
For Glencore, the divestment follows a comprehensive review of the resource's development options. The joint venture concluded that handing the asset to Rio Tinto offers the most viable path forward, citing the buyer's established operational footprint in Queensland. Rio Tinto continues to prioritize these expansions to secure a stable supply of bauxite, a critical precursor for global aluminum production.
