Coherix Introduces Real-Time Adaptive Adhesive Inspection System

A new inspection system from Ann Arbor-based Coherix is shifting automotive assembly standards by correcting adhesive application as it happens. The 3D GlassMaster Tracker uses high-speed lasers to adjust robot paths in real time, addressing geometry variations that previously caused production delays, safety risks, and expensive rework for global manufacturers.

Traditional inspection systems typically identify defects only after adhesive application, often resulting in scrapped parts or line stoppages. The GlassMaster Tracker changes this dynamic by monitoring part-to-part variations during the dispensing process itself. By automatically compensating for inconsistencies in glass shape and battery-cover geometry, the system ensures precise bonding, which is essential for vehicle structural integrity and battery safety. Improper seals in these areas can lead to moisture intrusion or, in severe cases, structural failure during a rollover.

Coherix chairman and CEO Dwight Carlson reports that early adopters have reclaimed up to five hours of weekly assembly line downtime, translating to roughly $22,500 in savings per week. Beyond efficiency, the platform generates a permanent digital record for every part produced. This traceability provides OEMs with a verifiable audit trail for warranty investigations and regulatory compliance. With over 6,000 units currently deployed worldwide, the technology represents a significant investment in manufacturing precision, supported by over 1,000,000 engineering hours.
