Perosphere Study Validates Rapid Coagulation Testing for DOAC Patients

Patients taking apixaban or rivaroxaban can now undergo rapid, bedside coagulation assessments following new data published in Thrombosis and Haemostasis. The study confirms that the ClotChek system provides reliable pharmacodynamic measurements, addressing critical diagnostic gaps for individuals facing major bleeding, stroke, or emergency surgical procedures.

The research validates the ClotChek Clotting Time (CKCT) as an effective tool for measuring Factor Xa inhibitor activity. Investigators observed strong correlations between CKCT results and anti-FXa drug levels, particularly at medical decision limits of 30 ng/mL and 75 ng/mL. By providing results in three to eight minutes, the device aims to eliminate the need for the empiric treatment decisions or treatment delays that currently complicate care for patients on direct oral anticoagulants.

Sasha Bakhru, CEO of Perosphere, noted that the system measures coagulation status directly in whole blood without requiring extra reagents. Dr. Jack Ansell, a co-author and former Department of Medicine Chairman at Lenox Hill Hospital, emphasized that the lack of objective, rapid testing often forces clinicians to operate in the dark during time-sensitive medical crises. While the technology is currently CE-marked in the European Union, it has not yet received clearance from the FDA for use in the United States.
