The platform reported that its iOS and Android applications gained more than 2 million new users over the past week. System1 attributes this growth to its refusal to update geographic labels on its mapping platform, standing in contrast to both Apple and Google, which have already implemented the government-mandated naming change to Lake America. At the peak of the traffic spike on August 31, MapQuest usage reached 50 times its normal rate, propelling the service to the eighth-ranked free app in the U.S. Apple App Store.
This market activity marks a significant shift for the stock, which closed at $1.89 on August 28 before entering a period of heavy trading volume. While the current momentum is driven by the mapping dispute, System1 continues to manage a portfolio that includes CouponFollow, Startpage, and IntentStream. The company's second-quarter revenue previously dipped to $30.2 million from $78.1 million a year earlier, a decline management tied to reduced marketing expenditures across its search monetization properties.
