Agentic AI Foundation Introduces First Official MCP Certification

As monthly downloads for Model Context Protocol SDKs push toward the half-billion mark, the Agentic AI Foundation has launched the Model Context Protocol Associate (MCPA) certification. This vendor-neutral credential aims to standardize expertise in architecture, security, and integration for engineers building the next generation of agentic systems.

The MCPA exam arrives as the protocol sees rapid adoption, with tool calls from ChatGPT users increasing 98-fold between January and August 2026. Designed for platform engineers and AI governance professionals, the certification provides a formal benchmark for those managing the complex trust boundaries and permissions inherent in modern agentic deployments.

The 120-minute, proctored, multiple-choice exam evaluates candidates across five core domains: fundamentals, architecture, interactions, security, and ecosystem application. It is aligned with the July 2026 specification release to ensure that certified builders remain current with the latest protocol standards. According to David Soria Parra, co-creator and lead maintainer of MCP, the credential serves to formalize a shared understanding of the protocol, preventing the need for fragmented, custom integrations across disparate systems.

Enrollment is currently open, with the Agentic AI Foundation offering a 20% discount for attendees of the AGNTCon + MCPCon events in Amsterdam and the upcoming North American conference in San Jose. The certification is managed through the Linux Foundation training platform, signaling a move toward broader industry standardization for AI infrastructure.
