The Succession Gap: Financial Advisors Struggle to Bridge Retirement Plans

The path to retirement for many financial professionals is becoming increasingly complex. With Cerulli Associates projecting that more than 35% of advisors will retire over the next decade, the industry faces an urgent need for continuity. However, the survey of 233 advisors highlights deep-seated resistance to formalizing these transitions. Nearly three-quarters of respondents admit that the sheer complexity of the process causes them to delay action, while one in four believe their retirement is simply too far off to prioritize.

Beyond technical challenges, the transition remains a deeply personal hurdle. Sixty-one percent of senior advisors find it emotionally difficult to choose a successor they trust with their life’s work. This hesitation exists despite a ready pipeline of talent: 86% of junior advisors express strong interest in acquiring or inheriting an established practice. Without firm-led intervention—such as structured matching, transition management, and teaming models—this generational handoff risks becoming a significant point of failure for client relationships.
