CATL Unveils TECTRANS II Platform to Power Global Freight Electrification

At the IAA Transportation 2026 summit in Hanover, Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL) introduced TECTRANS II, a modular battery architecture designed to standardize commercial vehicle electrification. The platform promises to shorten OEM development cycles by half while enabling ranges of up to 1,000 kilometers for heavy-duty transport.

The TECTRANS II system addresses the logistical hurdles of commercial fleets by offering a unified platform compatible with both e-axle and central-drive architectures. By standardizing physical dimensions and electrical interfaces, the technology allows for flexible switching between charging and battery swapping. This modularity enables manufacturers to reduce R&D costs by up to 70%, facilitating faster market entry for new electric models.

Technical performance metrics highlight significant improvements for long-haul operations. The battery reaches a gravimetric energy density of 170 Wh/kg—outpacing the industry average by 13%—and supports megawatt-level charging capable of reaching 80% capacity in 25 minutes. To ensure durability in demanding environments, the pack features a hot-formed steel upper cover and an extruded-aluminum enclosure, rated for a 1.5-million-kilometer service life.

Beyond hardware, CATL is expanding its European footprint through a renewed partnership with DHL Group. Building on a 2024 agreement, the two companies signed a Memorandum of Understanding to establish Green Freight Corridors across Europe. This initiative focuses on the co-development of purpose-built electric logistics vehicles, integrating CATL’s battery ecosystem with DHL’s operational network to accelerate the transition to sustainable heavy-duty transport.
