Denison-based roofing expert Cody Slagle suggests that a systematic inspection of shingles, gutters, flashing, and attic spaces immediately following a storm can prevent minor issues from evolving into costly repairs.

Shingles serve as the primary defense against the elements, making them the first point of failure during heavy winds or hail. Cracked or lifted shingles suggest that a storm has compromised the roof's integrity. Residents around Lake Texoma should prioritize these checks, as scattered hail often leaves distinct marks on multiple roof slopes that are easy to overlook from the ground.

Gutters and flashing require equal attention. Dented or sagging gutters often indicate that debris or excessive water flow pushed materials beyond their capacity, potentially forcing moisture back toward the roof structure. Meanwhile, flashing around chimneys and vent stacks is susceptible to high winds; even a slight upward bend can create a hidden pathway for water. According to Slagle, leaks often emerge far from the actual entry point, making flashing integrity critical.

Finally, an attic assessment provides the most reliable internal confirmation of damage. Damp insulation or a musty odor near rafters serves as a clear warning sign that moisture has breached the roof. Because Texoma storms frequently occur in rapid succession, Slagle advises repeating the inspection process 48 hours after the initial event. Changing light conditions and the drying of materials often reveal cracks or gaps that were invisible during the immediate aftermath. Observing neighboring properties can also provide context; if surrounding homes require repairs, it is likely that the local storm path impacted your own structure, regardless of initial appearances.
