Lindblad Expeditions Acquires Luxury Antarctic Operator White Desert

Lindblad Expeditions Holdings has secured a majority stake in White Desert, the high-end Antarctic tourism firm, and its aviation sibling Echo Charlie for approximately $61 million. The move signals a strategic expansion into the ultra-luxury adventure market, bringing polar exploration and specialized vintage-aircraft travel under the company's global umbrella.

The acquisition grants Lindblad a 60% stake in the ventures founded by polar explorer Patrick Woodhead. White Desert, established in 2005, specializes in flying guests into the Antarctic interior to visit geographic landmarks and penguin colonies, offering a logistical complexity rarely found in polar tourism. Echo Charlie, a newer brand, utilizes a restored DC-3 aircraft to provide curated, remote-access expeditions across diverse global landscapes ranging from Greenland to Patagonia.

Under the terms of the deal, Woodhead will transition into the role of Strategic Innovation Advisor for Lindblad while maintaining leadership positions at both acquired companies. The brands will continue to function as independent entities to preserve their niche operational cultures. Lindblad management noted that the acquisition prompted an upward revision of their 2026 financial guidance, with tour revenues now projected between $850 million and $880 million and Adjusted EBITDA forecasted at $140 million to $148 million. This expansion follows Lindblad’s broader strategy of assembling a diversified portfolio of experiential travel brands, moving beyond its traditional ship-based expedition roots.
