Principal investigator Dr. Markus Trochsler reported that the FerroTrace marker showed no toxicity-related adverse events across the entire patient cohort. In a subset of 24 patients eligible for de-escalated surgery, the platform achieved a 96% identification rate for sentinel nodes. Notably, the study recorded a 0% false-negative rate among the seven node-positive patients evaluated, with a 100% negative predictive value, indicating high diagnostic accuracy.
The findings address a long-standing challenge in oncology. While lymph node mapping is standard practice for breast cancer and melanoma, previous attempts to apply similar techniques to gastric and oesophageal cancers have failed due to the impact of pre-surgical chemotherapy or radiotherapy on marker detection. This trial marks the first instance where a marker injected before such treatments remained detectable during surgery. Furthermore, 68% of participants had sentinel nodes identified outside the tissue typically removed during standard-of-care procedures, suggesting that current surgical protocols may leave significant gaps in staging.
Geoff Parnell, a cancer survivor and Chair of GI Cancer Trials, emphasized that these developments are crucial for improving patient quality of life. By enabling clinicians to tailor surgical approaches individually, the technology aims to reduce the extent of operations for patients with earlier-stage disease. Ferronova plans to expand this research with a larger patient cohort to validate these early outcomes and refine the clinical application of the platform.
