KSI Lisims LNG Secures Australian Supply Deal

A proposed liquefied natural gas terminal on Canada’s west coast has locked in a long-term supply agreement with Australia's Santos. The deal for 1 million metric tons of fuel annually over two decades underscores a broader Canadian push to pivot energy exports away from a near-total reliance on the United States.

The agreement marks the third international offtake contract for the KSI Lisims LNG venture this year, following similar commitments with Germany’s Uniper and Securing Energy for Europe. The project, a partnership between Western LNG, local Nisga’a Nation members, and Western Canadian gas producers, is designed to export 12 million tons of LNG annually. With a price tag near 30 billion Canadian dollars, the floating facility aims to capture growing demand across the Pacific Basin.

Federal Energy Minister Tim Hodgson noted that such partnerships with indigenous communities offer a pathway for Canada to emerge as a reliable energy superpower. The venture currently holds sales agreements with Uniper, Shell, and TotalEnergies for half of its planned capacity, and CEO Davis Thames expects to finalize the remaining commercialization targets before the year ends. Ottawa’s major projects office is currently reviewing the proposal to streamline the regulatory approval process, a move aligned with Canada’s goal to redirect 55% of its gas exports to non-U.S. markets by the mid-2030s.
