Hallador Energy Secures $600 Million for Turtle Creek Gas Plant

Shares of Hallador Energy climbed 8% to $15.90 on Thursday after the company finalized a $600 million senior secured term loan. The capital injection provides a critical financial foundation for the firm’s 460-megawatt Turtle Creek gas-fired power project, which has faced recent delays in its development timeline.

The financing package includes $550 million available immediately, with a $50 million delayed draw commitment accessible over the next year. Hallador maintains the option to layer on a $75 million revolving credit facility, potentially pushing the total financing capacity to $675 million. This liquidity is earmarked for construction costs, turbine acquisitions, and infrastructure refurbishment. Approximately $120 million of the new proceeds will retire existing debt, specifically a $45 million term loan and a $75 million credit line.

Despite the project’s total cost remaining under $800 million, management acknowledged that certain development milestones have slipped behind initial projections. Even so, the company insists that the economic outlook for the power plant remains unchanged. Turbine shipments are proceeding as planned, and negotiators are currently finalizing the primary engineering and construction contracts. The loan carries a three-year maturity with a potential two-year extension, signaling what the company describes as a credible pathway toward project completion.
