Constructing the line required unprecedented technical ingenuity to combat the shifting nature of the ground. With roughly a quarter of the track traversing permafrost—where ice content often exceeds 80 percent—engineers faced severe risks of structural collapse due to seasonal thawing and freezing. To stabilize the subgrade, crews installed tens of thousands of heat-conducting pipes designed to vent underground warmth, paired with 111 kilometers of crushed rock ventilation layers to maintain a permanent freeze.
Beyond engineering, the project integrated extensive environmental safeguards to protect the plateau's fragile ecosystem. Designers incorporated 33 dedicated wildlife crossings, including the Wudaoliang Bridge, which facilitates the annual migration of over 5,000 Tibetan antelopes. Over the last two decades, the railway has evolved into a vital economic artery, moving more than 100 million tons of freight while providing remote communities with improved access to education and essential markets. The project currently stands as a model for balancing infrastructure expansion with the preservation of high-altitude wilderness.
