The new connector packs 16 fibers into a 3.5 x 9 mm footprint, a design aimed at the increasingly crowded space of co-packaged optics and front-panel switch applications. By enabling up to 3,456 fibers in a single 1RU panel, the system addresses the rigid physical limitations currently hindering scale-up GPU clusters. Trevor Smith, general manager of Optical Connectivity at Molex, noted that the technology provides a smaller blast radius and reduced contamination risk, allowing for granular 16-channel serviceability without requiring highly specialized technical expertise.

Beyond density, the hardware simplifies deployment for switch OEMs and field technicians. The connector utilizes 3M’s groove-based EBO ferrule, which removes the need for traditional guide pins and holes, facilitating high-speed robotic assembly. Maintenance is further streamlined by the zero-touch nature of the expanded beam optics, which are less sensitive to dust and debris than standard connectors. The hardware also features inherent laser eye safety, protecting personnel during routine upgrades. Limited sampling is scheduled for late 2026, with full production expected in the first half of 2027.
