Nursing Shortage Drives Gateway Education to Slash Prerequisite Costs

With the U.S. facing a projected deficit of registered nurses through 2038, Gateway Education is revamping the entry path for aspiring clinicians. By offering self-paced, online prerequisite courses at a reduced cost, the organization aims to remove financial and scheduling barriers for those entering the competitive healthcare workforce.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics anticipates an average of 180,800 annual openings for registered nurses through 2035. This demand carries significant implications for public health, as clinical research consistently links higher staffing levels to improved patient outcomes and lower mortality rates. Gateway Education seeks to address this by streamlining the initial phase of nursing education, which often requires a suite of foundational courses such as Anatomy and Physiology, Microbiology, and Statistics.

Gateway’s model allows students to bypass traditional semester schedules, offering coursework at $79 per class plus a $95 monthly membership fee. According to Gateway President David Christy, this structure is designed to convert potential candidates who might otherwise be deterred by the high cost and rigid timelines of conventional academic paths. While the pace is flexible, the academic rigor remains intact; all courses are evaluated by the American Council on Education, ensuring they meet credit standards for partner institutions. By lowering the barrier to entry for core requirements, the initiative aims to stabilize a workforce that is currently struggling to keep pace with national healthcare needs.
