Traditional H.265 codecs, which compress entire frames at uniform rates, are struggling to keep pace with the high-resolution requirements of modern surveillance networks.

Hikvision’s Guanlan Encoding attempts to solve this by integrating its large-scale AI model directly into the compression workflow. The system distinguishes between high-value subjects—such as people and vehicles—and static backgrounds. By allocating more data to moving objects while aggressively compressing peripheral areas, the technology claims to reduce storage requirements by 30 to 50 percent. Adoption is already underway, with 8.3 percent of surveyed professionals reporting active use of the system and over 40 percent expressing familiarity with the solution’s capabilities.
