Paul brings a unique perspective to the San Francisco-based firm, which currently manages over $2.2 billion in committed capital. His tenure as president of the National Basketball Players Association—a role he held for eight years—saw him navigating complex labor negotiations and organizational growth, skills he now plans to apply to the founders within Owl’s ecosystem. According to managing partner Ian Chiu, Paul’s ability to recognize potential and facilitate success mirrors his playmaking style on the basketball court.
The partnership arrives at a critical juncture for the education technology sector, as artificial intelligence fundamentally alters how skills are acquired and applied in the workplace. Owl Ventures, which backs companies serving more than 700 million users, intends to use Paul’s expertise to bridge the gap between emerging technology and real-world application. For Paul, the move is an extension of his long-standing philanthropic efforts, including his work with the Chris Paul Family Foundation and his initiatives at various HBCUs. He maintains that access to education and economic opportunity remains the primary driver of human potential.
