The series focuses on the transition of rescue animals into roles as support companions for military families. Featured stories include the placement of Peaches, a mixed-breed dog, with an Air Force veteran, and Steve, a poodle being matched with a Marine Corps veteran. The program also introduces Smoky, a certified therapy dog and USAA's official K9 ambassador, who works alongside her handler, Air Force Reservist Chris.

Following the premiere, CBS will air the second season of Lucky Dog: Down Under, which tracks McMillan’s work rescuing and rehabilitating dogs in Australia. Since its launch in 2013, the Lucky Dog franchise has successfully re-homed over 200 dogs, earning three Daytime Emmy Awards and dozens of industry honors. Hearst Media Production Group, the series producer, currently manages a library of 85 programs distributed across 100 countries.
