Price sensitivity is at an inflection point, with 59% of consumers reporting that cost matters more to them now than it did six months ago. Despite this heightened focus, only 32% of shoppers express confidence that retailers are providing fair or competitive pricing. This skepticism is driving a wave of hyper-vigilant behavior, where nearly half of all online shoppers actively compare prices across multiple retailers before committing to a purchase.

The friction is compounded by inconsistencies between physical and digital storefronts. Roughly 68% of customers now cross-reference retailer websites while standing in-store to hunt for better deals. This lack of transparency has tangible consequences for loyalty: 57% of consumers state they would lose trust in a brand if they discovered prices were being adjusted based on their personal shopping data.

Artificial intelligence is accelerating this scrutiny. Nearly a quarter of consumers already leverage tools like ChatGPT or Google Gemini to conduct price comparisons, a figure expected to rise during the upcoming holiday season. For retailers, the challenge is no longer just about the sticker price; it is about data governance. When AI tools encounter conflicting pricing information across various channels, they may struggle to identify the most reliable source, potentially steering shoppers away from a brand entirely.
