Variant Bio and Boehringer Ingelheim Expand AI Drug Discovery Pact

Boehringer Ingelheim is deepening its partnership with Seattle-based Variant Bio, extending their existing research into kidney disease to include cardiovascular conditions. The expanded multi-year deal leverages Variant Bio’s AI-powered Inference platform to identify novel genetic targets, with the total value of the agreement now exceeding $250 million.

The collaboration utilizes Variant Bio's proprietary technology, which synthesizes human genomic data, deep phenotyping, and multi-omic insights gathered from diverse global populations. By applying machine learning and large language models to these datasets, the companies aim to compress the timeline between initial genetic association and the validation of a therapeutic hypothesis.

Andrew Farnum, CEO of Variant Bio, noted that the platform is designed to translate the richness of human genetic diversity into drug targets at a scale previously unattainable. For Boehringer Ingelheim, the expansion represents a strategic effort to find genetically supported pathways for first-in-class treatments. Søren Tullin, the company's Global Head of Cardiovascular-Renal-Metabolic Diseases Research, emphasized that the move seeks to combine deep disease expertise with the predictive power of human genetics.
