The bulk of this material has been moved across European customer sites, most notably at the Brønnøy Kalk quarry in Norway and the Boliden Garpenberg mine in Sweden. In Norway, Volvo’s fleet manages a five-kilometer route characterized by steep inclines and long tunnel sections, a task that began in 2023. By 2025, that single site had already cleared one million tonnes, signaling a rapid acceleration in the technology's deployment.

Volvo’s strategy relies on its Autona/earth platform, which bundles specialized trucks with the proprietary Volvo Virtual Driver, infrastructure support, and fleet management systems. By manufacturing these units at its Säffle facility, the company aims to bypass the technical barriers traditionally associated with site automation. According to Ingo Stürmer, CTO at Volvo Autonomous Solutions, the three-million-tonne milestone proves that their autonomous transport is no longer experimental but a mature, scalable solution capable of maintaining continuous operations in demanding, hazardous conditions.
