Iran Threatens to Extend Conflict to Indian Ocean

The conflict in the Middle East risks shifting into the Indian Ocean, according to a top aide to Iran’s Supreme Leader. Yahya Rahim Safavi warned on Thursday that any further military aggression against Tehran would force the Islamic Republic to broaden its battlefront, potentially targeting critical naval installations.

Iran Threatens to Extend Conflict to Indian Ocean

Safavi’s comments, released via the Fars news agency, signal a shift in Iranian military posture, moving beyond the traditional theaters of the Persian Gulf and the Red Sea. The warning specifically raises the profile of Diego Garcia, a strategic U.S.-UK military base located 2,400 miles away in the Indian Ocean. While the base was targeted by ballistic missiles during previous escalations, the explicit threat to widen the conflict further destabilized energy markets, pushing Brent crude to approximately $106 per barrel.

Diplomatic efforts remain stalled following meetings at the UN General Assembly in New York. IRGC spokesman Brig. Gen. Hossein Mohbi stated that Tehran has hardened its conditions for ending hostilities, accusing the U.S. of violating prior agreements. This rhetoric coincides with renewed regional violence, including the Saudi-led coalition’s interception of six ballistic missiles launched by Iranian-backed Houthi rebels. As the IRGC claims to be consolidating a deterrent force, the prospect of a de-escalation appears increasingly remote.
