The European Commission maintains that the regional energy network is secure, even as data from Gas Infrastructure Europe paints a more sobering picture. As of September 24, reserves are trailing significantly behind the five-year average, which typically exceeds 80%. Germany, which operates the world’s fourth-largest storage capacity, sits at a concerning 57% fill rate, fueling anxiety that a harsh winter could strain the continent’s limited resources.
Market volatility has been exacerbated by transit disruptions at the Strait of Hormuz, where LNG shipments have struggled to navigate the chokepoint compared to crude oil. This bottleneck has forced global buyers to scramble for supply that bypasses the region, driving prices to their highest levels since the 2022-2023 energy crisis. While the Commission continues to monitor the situation, the disparity between official optimism and the current filling season progress remains a central tension for EU energy policy.
