Germany Dismisses Winter Gas Supply Fears

With national gas reserves hovering at 57%—the lowest in Europe—Germany faces mounting scrutiny as winter approaches. Yet, VNG, one of the nation's primary importers, maintains that the energy system is far more resilient than in 2022, bolstered by a strategic pivot toward diverse LNG sources and new international partnerships.

Germany Dismisses Winter Gas Supply Fears

VNG chief executive Ulf Heitmueller insists the company can meet all delivery obligations, even during a prolonged cold snap. The firm has aggressively moved to replace lost Russian pipeline supplies by securing long-term agreements with Norway, Azerbaijan, and Algeria. A pivotal contract signed this summer with Algeria’s state energy firm, Sonatrach, is set to guarantee additional gas volumes starting in 2027, marking a shift in the country's procurement strategy.

While Gas Infrastructure Europe reports that EU storage sites currently average 70% capacity, Germany’s levels remain significantly lower. This discrepancy has triggered market anxiety regarding potential shortages. However, VNG maintains that its broadened portfolio and increased access to global LNG terminals provide a necessary safety net, insulating the German market from the volatility that defined the energy crisis of previous years.
