A Decade of Inclusion: Lessons from Bitty & Beau's Coffee

Ten years ago, Amy and Ben Wright launched a small Wilmington coffee shop with 19 employees living with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Today, their company has scaled to include over 500 workers across the country, challenging the corporate status quo by proving that inclusive hiring is a sound business strategy.

The Wrights built their model on a simple premise: people rise when given the opportunity. Instead of viewing disability through the lens of necessary accommodations, the company asks what talent is being overlooked by traditional hiring practices. At their shops and via mobile Coffee Cruisers, employees handle customer-facing roles, from taking orders to managing inventory. This visibility is intentional, designed to bridge the gap between people who might otherwise never interact.

After a decade of operations, the company identifies five core takeaways for the broader business world. High expectations drive performance, and diverse learning styles do not equate to lower output. When inclusion becomes an ordinary business practice rather than a charitable act, it fosters authentic connections that shift public perception. For the Wrights, the goal is not to be the sole employer of people with disabilities, but to normalize this workforce participation until it is expected in every sector of the economy.
