U.S. Auto Sales Face Permanent Plateau Through 2030

The era of 17-million-unit annual vehicle sales in the United States appears to be over. According to a new forecast from Mobility Global, the market is expected to reach 16.1 million units in 2026 and hover around 16.4 million by 2030, hampered by a persistent affordability crisis.

Analysts at a recent media briefing identified consumer purchasing power as the primary obstacle preventing a return to the pre-pandemic volumes witnessed between 2016 and 2019. While supply chain constraints previously held the market back, current conditions suggest a structural shift. Peter Nagle, Associate Director for Americas Demand Forecasting, noted that the market is hitting a ceiling, unable to replicate the high-volume thresholds of the previous decade.

Automakers are now recalibrating to a fragmented global landscape. As the industry moves toward regionalized production—designing and building vehicles specifically for the North American, European, and Asian markets—manufacturers face rising costs and regulatory uncertainty. This shift has led to a wave of battery-electric vehicle cancellations, though hybrid production is surging. Mobility Global expects North American assembly of full hybrid electric vehicles to exceed 3 million units by 2027, representing a 25% annual increase. As companies like the newly independent Mobility Global navigate this climate, the ability to process data and adapt to rapid market changes has become the industry's most critical competitive advantage.
