Kakaopay Securities and Dinari Explore Tokenized Korean Equities

Korean brokerage giant Kakaopay Securities is partnering with San Mateo-based Dinari to bridge the gap between local public companies and global investors. By leveraging Dinari’s dShares™ infrastructure, the firms aim to tokenize Korean-listed equities, potentially bypassing the limitations of traditional depositary receipts for international market access.

The collaboration marks a shift toward digitizing South Korean assets, with the companies launching a joint task force later this year. This group will evaluate the technical and regulatory requirements for creating a custodial model where each token is backed one-to-one by an underlying Korean share. The goal is to ensure that international holders of these tokens retain essential shareholder rights, including voting capabilities and dividend distributions.

For Kakaopay Securities, the move aligns with its broader strategy to expand its footprint beyond domestic mobile-first services. Executive Vice President Inyoung Chung noted that the initiative seeks to establish a concrete framework for global distribution, starting with a formal proof of concept. Dinari CEO Gabe Otte emphasized that while Korea hosts some of the world’s most significant public companies, current investment channels remain restrictive. Dinari, an SEC-registered transfer agent, currently supports 724 tokenized U.S. stocks and ETFs across more than 85 jurisdictions, providing a blueprint for this new venture into the Asian market.
