Nuvoton Unveils 26-Cell Battery Monitor With Integrated EIS

Nuvoton Technology Corporation Japan is moving to modernize battery diagnostics with the KA85010UA, a new 26-cell monitoring integrated circuit. Slated for sample distribution in January 2027, the chip features proprietary inductor-based technology designed to slash heat generation during impedance measurements by 93 percent compared to traditional resistor methods.

The KA85010UA integrates Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) directly onto the chip, removing the need for external, specialized testing equipment. By superimposing an AC current onto the battery and analyzing the resulting response, the system can monitor internal conditions in real time. This allows for precise estimation of State of Health (SOH) and internal temperature, alongside the early detection of cell abnormalities that conventional voltage or current sensors often miss.

The adoption of an inductor-based architecture addresses a significant barrier to the widespread use of EIS in high-density environments like electric vehicles and large-scale energy storage systems. By reducing power loss and thermal strain on the printed circuit board, the IC enables continuous data acquisition during charging, discharge, and idle states. Nuvoton intends to bundle the hardware with specialized analysis algorithms and technical support, aiming to shorten development cycles for manufacturers integrating sophisticated diagnostic systems into their battery management units.
