United Community Bank Foundation Hits $3 Million Milestone

Five years after its inception, the United Community Bank Foundation has funneled $2.96 million into local initiatives across the Southeast. By empowering employees to nominate grassroots organizations, the institution has completed 1,146 grants, focusing on economic development, housing, arts, and youth programs throughout its six-state footprint.

The foundation operates on a decentralized model where staff members identify critical needs within their own neighborhoods. This employee-led strategy dictates funding across four pillars: economic empowerment, housing strategies, artistic expression, and youth development. By leveraging the Together For Good Council, the bank ensures its resources reach organizations where employees already volunteer their time.

Impact spans diverse regional needs, ranging from supporting Greenville-based nonprofit lender CommunityWorks to funding long-term partnerships with Habitat for Humanity affiliates. In Alabama, the bank maintains a decade-long commitment to the Huntsville Museum of Art, while in Tennessee, its support for the Boys & Girls Club has helped participating seniors achieve a 100 percent graduation rate. Beyond routine grants, the organization demonstrated its agility during the 2024 recovery efforts following Hurricane Helene, deploying $350,000 in emergency aid to Western North Carolina.

National recognition has also followed these efforts, including an American Bankers Association Foundation award for volunteerism. During National Financial Literacy Month, the team conducted over 150 workshops for 13,400 individuals, supplemented by $30,000 in targeted grants. As the foundation moves into its second half-decade, CEO Lynn Harton attributes the success to a staff that prioritizes local involvement over top-down directives.
