U.S. Taps Strategic Reserve as Diesel Prices Breach $6 Mark

With diesel prices surging past $6 per gallon and gasoline hovering above $4, the U.S. Department of Energy has authorized the release of another 40 million barrels of crude from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, the final phase of a coordinated international effort to stabilize energy supplies amid the ongoing Iran conflict.

This final tranche completes the 172-million-barrel commitment pledged to the International Energy Agency. Following the release, the reserve is set to hit its lowest level since 1982. Current inventories have already dropped significantly; as of late August, the reserve held 286.6 million barrels, placing it more than 445 million barrels below its maximum capacity. Federal law restricts further non-emergency drawdowns once levels dip below 252.4 million barrels, a threshold approaching rapidly.

Commercial stocks offer little relief, having fallen by more than 48 million barrels over the last 20 weeks. Distillate inventories remain 14% below the five-year average, while gasoline supplies are 6% below seasonal norms. Energy Secretary Chris Wright has publicly pressured European IEA members to fulfill their own outstanding stock commitments, noting that several nations have yet to release their full pledges. The current U.S. release functions as an exchange, requiring companies to return the crude—plus additional barrels as interest—by a future date, a process the DOE expects will eventually replenish the reserve with roughly 200 million barrels. Bids for the current release are due October 6.
