Saronic Breaks Ground on $3 Billion Port Alpha Shipyard in Texas

Vice President JD Vance and Governor Greg Abbott joined Saronic leadership in Brownsville on Monday to break ground on Port Alpha, a 835-acre shipyard project. The facility aims to revitalize American maritime industrial capacity by producing both autonomous and manned vessels at a scale intended to reshape domestic naval manufacturing.

The project represents a private capital investment exceeding $3 billion, with the potential to expand from its initial 835-acre footprint to nearly 4,400 acres. Projections indicate the site will generate 10,000 direct jobs and contribute an estimated $264.5 billion to the Texas economy. Saronic CEO Dino Mavrookas described the facility as a software-defined shipyard designed to address critical capacity backlogs facing both commercial and defense sectors, including the U.S. Navy.

Port Alpha is slated to introduce an initial 150,000 gross tons of annual shipbuilding capacity, a figure the company claims will more than double current U.S. commercial output. The site is engineered to eventually scale to over 2 million gross tons, with production capabilities for vessels up to 850 feet, and potentially 1,200 feet following future expansions. JE Dunn and Alberici have formed a joint venture to lead the construction of the initial phase, which includes 1.2 million square feet of enclosed production space and 2,500 feet of deepwater quay.

This development aligns with federal mandates for a modernized, hybrid fleet. Beyond the hardware, Saronic is partnering with regional educational institutions to address a national shortfall of roughly 250,000 skilled maritime workers. The company has already secured a contract for Landing Craft Utility (LCU) vessels for the Navy, marking the first step in its long-term plan to restore the nation's position as a dominant maritime power.
