Joshua Kolsrud Updates Essential Guide for Criminal Defense Attorneys

Immigration law now permeates nearly every American courtroom, yet most defense attorneys lack the specialized training to navigate its complex consequences. Phoenix defense lawyer Joshua Kolsrud and Robert J. McWhirter have released the third edition of The Criminal Lawyer's Guide to Immigration Law to bridge this critical knowledge gap.

The updated volume addresses approximately 700 recurring questions faced by judges, prosecutors, and defense counsel. By maintaining a straightforward question-and-answer format, the authors provide a practical roadmap for identifying immigration pitfalls during plea negotiations and sentencing. The edition incorporates two decades of legal shifts, including landmark rulings like Padilla and Loper Bright, while covering modern enforcement issues such as border searches, aggravated felonies, and document fraud.

For Kolsrud, the project stems from his extensive background as a former prosecutor at the state, federal, and international levels, including work along the U.S.-Mexico border. Now leading Kolsrud Law Offices in Phoenix, he emphasizes that a seemingly favorable plea agreement can inadvertently lead to deportation. With over 3,500 federal cases and 100 trials under his belt, Kolsrud designed the guide to ensure attorneys can spot these traps before they jeopardize a client's status.
