ZYUS Life Sciences Reports Positive Results for Non-Opioid Cancer Pain Drug

Saskatoon-based ZYUS Life Sciences announced promising results from its Phase 2a UTOPIA-1 trial, where the non-opioid drug candidate Trichomylin demonstrated significant pain management potential and a notable reduction in rescue opioid use among patients battling advanced cancer.

The clinical trial, conducted across three Canadian sites including the McGill University Health Center, evaluated 11 patients maintained on standard opioid therapy. Data indicated that 91% of participants successfully reached a stable dose of Trichomylin through individualized titration. Among the evaluable subset, patients reported clinically relevant improvements in pain interference, fatigue, and sleep quality, suggesting a broader quality-of-life benefit beyond simple analgesia.

A key finding centered on the drug's interaction with standard care. While all participants were prescribed opioids for breakthrough pain, 28% of the evaluable group required no rescue medication during the study. Furthermore, rescue opioid use dropped from approximately 79% during the titration phase to 6% once patients reached stable dosing. These results align with recent FDA draft guidance prioritizing the development of non-opioid alternatives that limit patient exposure to addictive pain management therapies.

ZYUS management confirmed plans to advance Trichomylin into larger randomized controlled trials, intending to establish opioid-reduction as a co-primary endpoint. The company will present its findings at the Montreal International Palliative Care Congress later this month, marking a significant milestone in its effort to position Trichomylin as a viable alternative to conventional NSAIDs and opioids.
