American Liver Foundation Marks Awareness Month with Expanded Outreach

With an estimated 100 million Americans living with undiagnosed liver conditions, the American Liver Foundation is dedicating October to National Liver Awareness and Liver Cancer Month. The organization is deploying a series of digital health tools, patient summits, and legislative advocacy campaigns to combat rising rates of hepatocellular carcinoma.

Early detection remains the primary challenge in managing liver health, as symptoms often remain subtle until the disease has progressed. To address this, the foundation has launched a one-minute digital risk assessment available in both English and Spanish. This effort coincides with a push to improve screening rates, as incidence of liver cancer has more than tripled since 1980.

Beyond diagnostic tools, the month-long initiative includes a focus on lifestyle and policy. The foundation is promoting a 30-day meal plan to assist patients in managing their health through nutrition and is organizing a virtual advocacy drive to urge Congress to increase research funding and protect living organ donors. For those seeking community support, the foundation is offering free, social worker-led online groups for patients, caregivers, and transplant recipients.

Educational programming also features prominently, including the MASH Empower & Educate Summit on October 16 and 17, and a series of professional medical workshops aimed at improving multidisciplinary care for end-stage liver disease. The month concludes with a 50th-anniversary gala in New York City, honoring the organization's long-term commitment to advancing liver wellness and prevention.
