Kirk Johnson returns to lead Denver Museum of Nature & Science

After fourteen years steering the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History, paleontologist Kirk Johnson is returning to Denver to serve as president and CEO of the Denver Museum of Nature & Science. He will succeed George Sparks on February 1, 2027, bridging his national experience with his deep local roots.

Johnson is no stranger to the institution, having spent two decades in Denver before his departure in 2012. During his previous tenure, he rose to chief curator and vice president of research and collections, gaining local acclaim for co-leading the landmark Snowmastodon excavation near Snowmass Village. His return marks a homecoming for a leader who has spent the last decade managing a collection of nearly 149 million specimens and overseeing four million annual visitors in Washington, D.C.

Board chair Jena Hausmann emphasized that Johnson’s blend of international prestige and institutional history makes him the ideal candidate for the museum’s next era. Beyond his administrative work, Johnson is a prolific author of 17 books and a familiar face to television audiences through his NOVA documentaries, including "Polar Extremes" and "Making North America." He holds a doctorate from Yale University and remains a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. The appointment follows a national search led by trustee Rick Ambrose, who will oversee the leadership transition as he assumes the role of board chair.
