Huntsville, Grand Rapids and Oklahoma City Named Heartland's Secret Sauce

Three cities have been designated as Secret Sauce Communities by the policy group Heartland Forward during the 2026 Heartland Summit. Huntsville, Grand Rapids, and Oklahoma City earned the recognition for their distinct, locally-grown economic strategies that prioritize community-driven development and long-term regional competitiveness in the American heartland.

Huntsville, Alabama, leverages its deep ties to the aerospace and defense sectors, bolstered by a massive concentration of engineering talent and a collaborative approach to government relations. Mayor Tommy Battle credits the city's growth to its ability to bridge connections between local, state, and federal entities, particularly with the 70 tenant agencies housed at Redstone Arsenal.

Grand Rapids, Michigan, relies on a unique blend of civic ownership and public-private partnerships. The city’s economy, valued at approximately $77 billion, benefits from a culture where business leaders and philanthropists work alongside residents to solve regional challenges. Mayor David LaGrand describes this internal cohesion as the primary engine behind the city's resilience.

Oklahoma City’s transformation is defined by a consistent, decades-long commitment to self-investment. Since 1993, voters have approved 15 consecutive tax initiatives, directing roughly $10 billion toward infrastructure and quality-of-life improvements. Mayor David Holt points to this unified political culture—a rare consensus between City Hall and the private sector—as the catalyst for the city's rise, which now includes hosting major events like the 2028 Olympic competitions and sustaining the 2025 NBA champion Oklahoma City Thunder.
