Borrowers trade credit scores for debt relief as financial strain deepens

Seventy-nine percent of Americans burdened by significant unsecured debt are willing to sacrifice their credit scores if it means escaping their obligations faster. A new study from Freedom Debt Relief and Money.com reveals that despite aggressive personal cutbacks, nearly half of these borrowers remain unable to gain real financial traction.

The survey of 1,800 adults with at least $10,000 in unsecured debt paints a stark picture of a demographic stuck in a cycle of austerity. While 41% of respondents have eliminated dining out and 40% have halted nonessential shopping, these sacrifices are often offset by systemic financial pressure. Currently, 28% of borrowers can only afford minimum monthly payments, and 21% have fallen behind on at least one account.

Sean Fox, president of Freedom Debt Relief, noted that the data contradicts the common assumption that debt stems primarily from poor habits. Instead, many individuals are actively liquidating assets, with nearly one-third tapping into retirement savings and 24% borrowing against home equity to consolidate what they owe. Despite this, a lack of clear strategy and confidence in negotiating directly with creditors—where only half feel equipped to engage—leaves many in a state of chronic financial anxiety. The findings suggest that the desire for immediate cash flow and stress relief is now outweighing the long-term priority of maintaining a high credit rating.
