Longwood Gardens Turns to the Cosmos for Holiday Display

Longwood Gardens is trading traditional tinsel for a celestial aesthetic this winter, transforming its 1,100-acre estate into an interstellar landscape. Running from November 20, 2026, through January 10, 2027, the annual "A Longwood Christmas" will feature galaxy-inspired horticulture and light displays guided by imagery from the James Webb and Hubble space telescopes.

The transformation centers on the intersection of botanical artistry and astronomical wonder. Visitors entering the Visitor Center are greeted by deep-space imagery curated by the Space Telescope Science Institute, setting the tone for a journey that spans the East Conservatory’s gilded supernova installations to a 22-foot rotating Fraser fir adorned with metallic accents. In the Music Room, the display reimagines an astronomer’s observatory, complete with antique equipment and a 1923 Porter Garden Telescope originally owned by founder Pierre S. du Pont.

Beyond the indoor conservatories, the grounds feature more than half-a-million lights. The Meadow Garden has been updated with new shooting-star projections and half-moon arches, while the Italian Water Garden integrates light sequences with holiday music. For those looking to extend the experience, the estate is hosting curated culinary events, including "Taste of Christmas" dining sessions in The Fountain Room and a collaboration with Victory Brewing Company on a pomegranate ginger winter wheat ale. Admission for the holiday season is strictly by timed ticket, with reservations now open for the public.
