SereNeuro Therapeutics Secures Pre-Seed Capital for Pain Relief Pipeline

With an oversubscribed pre-seed round closed, Baltimore-based SereNeuro Therapeutics is accelerating its lead non-opioid program, SN101. The biotech firm aims to move its iPSC-derived therapy toward IND-enabling studies, leveraging unique cellular biology to treat chronic joint pain without the addictive risks associated with traditional opioid-based interventions.

The financing syndicate, which includes two Maryland-based venture firms and a physician investor, utilized the state’s Biotechnology Investment Incentive Tax Credit. This funding arrives as the company shifts its focus toward manufacturing and preclinical trials. Unlike competitors chasing specific sodium channels for symptom relief, SereNeuro utilizes living human sensory neurons that express the full Nav1.7, Nav1.8, and Nav1.9 pain-channel identity, a profile often missing in other stem-cell-derived treatments.

CEO Daniel Saragnese noted that the technology was initially discovered by accident while co-founders Xinzhong Dong and Gabsang Lee were developing a model to identify new drug targets. Upon injecting the purified neurons into a joint pain model, the team observed an unexpected therapeutic effect that preserved joint structure. Alongside SN101, the company is developing SN102, a gene therapy for trigeminal neuralgia. This second program recently secured an NIH Small Business Innovation Research award under the HEAL Initiative, further validating the firm's non-addictive approach to chronic pain management.
