HashSmash Pits AI Against the Bedrock of Internet Cryptography

Eigen Labs and Shielded Labs have launched HashSmash, an open competition designed to determine if artificial intelligence can successfully exploit the mathematical foundations of modern digital security. The project invites researchers to deploy AI agents against four critical hash functions that currently secure the global internet infrastructure.

The initiative targets SHA-256, SHA-3, BLAKE3, and Poseidon—algorithms that function as the digital fingerprints of the web, protecting everything from blockchain transactions to standard software verification. By hosting the challenge on Yukon, an open research platform, organizers aim to move beyond theoretical debate and gather empirical data on whether machine intelligence can identify vulnerabilities that have eluded human cryptographers. Participants are encouraged to utilize diverse techniques, including SAT solvers and automated differential search, to probe these mathematical structures.

This stress test serves as a pillar for the broader Epoch project, an effort by Shielded Labs to future-proof Zcash against emerging threats like quantum computing and advanced adversarial actors. Every attack submitted to the competition undergoes a two-stage verification process: first by an AI verifier, then by a panel of expert cryptographers. Because all findings are published openly, the project creates a collaborative, iterative environment where researchers build upon each other’s discoveries. Previous Yukon challenges have already demonstrated significant performance gains, such as a 60% improvement over Google Quantum AI benchmarks in signature schemes, underscoring the potential for AI to both expose and fortify cryptographic defenses.
