Escalating Yemen Conflict Threatens Saudi Red Sea Oil Routes

The Iran-aligned Houthi movement claimed a missile and drone strike on a Saudi Aramco facility in Riyadh this weekend, sparking a sharp denial from the Saudi-led coalition. The incident marks a volatile turn as the internationally recognized government launches a new offensive to reclaim territory held by the rebels.

Escalating Yemen Conflict Threatens Saudi Red Sea Oil Routes

Major General Turki Al-Malki, spokesman for the Saudi-led coalition, dismissed the Houthi claims as a deceptive tactic intended to mask internal losses and mounting public frustration. Amidst this rhetoric, the Yemeni government announced Sunday that it has initiated full-scale military operations to retake areas under Houthi control, including the capital, Sanaa, and key positions along the western coastline.

This renewed violence jeopardizes the strategic Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a vital artery connecting the Red Sea to global shipping routes. While Saudi Arabia recently resumed crude oil loadings at the Yanbu port—offering a critical alternative to the Strait of Hormuz—the Houthi threat forces many vessels to abandon the Red Sea entirely. Carriers are increasingly opting for the month-long detour around Africa’s Cape of Good Hope, adding significant strain to regional energy logistics.
