EBSCO Forecasts 4-6% Hike in 2027 Serials Pricing

This estimate, released in the firm’s annual outlook, arrives as institutions navigate a shifting landscape of open access mandates and complex transformative agreements.

The Ipswich-based provider attributes these rising costs to a combination of inflationary pressure, production expenses, and fundamental shifts in how publishers package their content. While individual e-journals and e-journal packages are expected to rise between 4 and 6 percent, print subscriptions remain the most volatile category, with projected increases reaching up to 7 percent.

These projections rely on a blend of publisher survey data, historical pricing cycles, and current market exchange rates. Beyond simple inflation, the report highlights how the rise of Read and Publish agreements is forcing libraries to rethink their collection strategies. As institutions grapple with these numbers, the report serves as a benchmark for planning the upcoming renewal season, though EBSCO advises that currency fluctuations could further alter the final financial impact for international buyers.
