How a Marlborough Janitorial Firm Built Giving Into Its Bottom Line

Luiz DaCosta does not view philanthropy as an annual tax write-off or a marketing tactic. Since launching Modular Concepts in 2008, the Marlborough-based owner has tethered his company’s expansion across three states to a standing commitment: donating a portion of proceeds to every nonprofit client served, regardless of their size.

The firm now employs over 100 professionals managing facilities ranging from medical clinics and schools to industrial warehouses. This growth has allowed the company to extend its footprint into Hartford, New Haven, Providence, and Cranston. Rather than relying on rigid, multi-year contracts to secure revenue, DaCosta maintains a flexible service model, banking on the theory that quality performance earns repeat business and sustains the charity budget.

This community-focused strategy recently manifested as a sponsorship for the Crossroads Continuum 5K, a Marlborough event supporting families affected by autism. Beyond such public partnerships, the company’s donation list spans two dozen organizations, including the MetroWest Free Medical Program and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. For DaCosta, the objective remains local: supporting the neighborhoods where his staff live and raise their own families.
