Revolut to Cover Identity Document Fees After Data Breach

Revolut will reimburse customers for the costs of updating identity documents following a security breach where the bank was tricked into surrendering personal data. Béatrice Cossa-Dumurgier, the firm's Western Europe CEO, confirmed the measure on Wednesday after hackers compromised an official Italian government email account to obtain the information.

The incident, first disclosed last month, affected 680 clients, including 55 individuals in France. Revolut emphasized that its own internal security systems remained uncompromised, pointing to government agency channels as a potential vulnerability. Cossa-Dumurgier stated that while the company is providing support, it has not paid any ransom to the attackers.

Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi revealed on September 30 that the request originated from a Reggio Calabria police email address that had never previously been active. The minister criticized the bank, noting that Revolut should have performed more rigorous due diligence before transmitting sensitive client information. A spokesperson for the London-based fintech declined to address the minister's specific remarks regarding the firm's verification processes.
