India Inflation Climbs to 5.4% Amid Rising Energy Costs

Driven by volatile oil markets and tightening supply chains, India’s inflation reached an estimated 5.4% in September, jumping from 4.82% the previous month. A Reuters survey of 41 economists confirms this upward trajectory, fueled by a persistent surge in energy prices that is now rippling across the broader economy.

The inflationary pressure prompted the Reserve Bank of India to implement its first interest rate hike in four years. Policymakers have officially shifted toward a stance of calibrated tightening, effectively removing potential rate cuts from the immediate horizon. ANZ economist Dhiraj Nim noted that energy costs are no longer confined to transportation expenses but are increasingly infiltrating the wider Consumer Price Index.

Global supply chain disruptions have compounded these fiscal challenges. As freight rates quadruple and insurance premiums for voyages through the Strait of Hormuz hit record levels, India’s crude import bill has swelled. With the average cost of the Indian basket of crude oil reaching $116.09 per barrel in September—and climbing past $120 in October—the nation faces mounting pressure to manage both the direct costs of fuel and the secondary effects on consumer goods.
