Viola Davis Partners With GSK to Combat Shingles Awareness Gap

Actress Viola Davis is going public with her personal battle against shingles, headlining a new GSK campaign titled "Shingles, actually." The initiative aims to push adults over 50 to look past their active lifestyles and recognize that aging naturally elevates their risk for the painful, blistering condition.

Davis described her own bout with the virus as a debilitating experience, noting that the pain reached a nine out of ten on her personal scale, effectively forcing her to halt her work and personal commitments. Despite maintaining a rigorous health regimen, the actress was surprised to discover that her age alone placed her in a high-risk category. GSK launched this national outreach to address the disconnect between how healthy many older adults feel and the physiological reality of a weakening immune system.

Approximately one million Americans develop shingles annually, yet many still view the condition as a minor inconvenience rather than a serious health hurdle. Dr. Jen Caudle, who is collaborating on the campaign, warned that the virus can lead to long-term complications affecting daily life. With roughly 99 percent of U.S. adults over 50 already carrying the varicella-zoster virus, the campaign urges the demographic to move beyond the assumption that they are immune to the reactivation of the virus and initiate proactive discussions with their physicians.
